Nightwolf vs. Chief Thunder by Dimension-Dino

Ray: Native Americans have proven themselves to have a long warrior history, long enough for moviemakers and storytellers to exploit the living crap out of them.

Steel: But when they’re not the stars of pretentious anti-Caucasian movies, they’re roughing up the fighting game genre while being totally AWESOME in the process.

Ray: Nightwolf, the deadly shamanistic Kombatant…

Steel: And Chief Thunder, the war-painted storm-bringer.

Ray: I’m Ray and he’s Steel, and it’s our job to analyze the weapons, skills, and combat styles of these two Native American warriors to find out who would win a DEATH BATTLE.

Nightwolf by Dimension-Dino

NIGHTWOLF…
First Appearance: Mortal Kombat 3 (1995)
Age: Unknown
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 207lbs
Ethnicity: Apache Indian
Theme:

FEATS…
Chosen by Raiden to be an Earthrealm Protector
Dissipated Shao Kahn’s Soulnado
Bound Onaga to Hell with “Sin Eater” (pre-retcon)
Foresaw Shao Kahn’s invasion via recurring nightmares

Ray: Nightwolf is a warrior shaman from a tribe of people world-renowned for their connection to the Spirit Realm. Through a series of visions and dreams, he actually foresaw Shao Kahn's invasion of Earthrealm. Shortly afterward, he was approached by none other than Lord Raiden to become a Protector of Earthrealm.

Steel: Turned out Raiden made the right choice, seeing as not only was Nightwolf a competent fighter, but a loyal friend, and a powerful and wise shaman to boot. Nightwolf is in touch with the Spirit World and can use this to perform magic, essentially.

Ray: Nightwolf’s preferred method of spirit energy usage is the creation of energy weapons like knives, tomahawks, and bows and arrows. All of these weapons can be used at any time Nightwolf needs them and are just as harmful as their real-life counterparts.

Steel: He can also create brief reflector shields to counter projectiles, shapeshift into a wolf, and like most Native American stereotypes, do a Rain Dance to call down lightning for enhancing his weapons and some epic fatalities.

(Nightwolf takes knives, charges them with lightning, then stabs opponent before calling down white light that incinerates them)

Steel: Hehe…sweet!

SHAMAN TECHNIQUES…
Energy weapons
-Knives
-Tomahawks
-Bows and arrows
Reflector
-Glows green and reflects projectiles
Call down lightning
Animality
-Shapeshifts into wolf (duh)

Ray: Nightwolf is a member of the Apache people, a tribe of Native Americans indigenous to the Southwestern United States, ranging from Arizona to New Mexico.

Steel: Trust me, this isn't as boring a history lesson as you think. Apache warriors, in the past, were notorious for their guerrilla tactics, sneaking up on and surprising enemy armies, using the chaos and surprise factors to take them out easier. And, to top it all off, Apaches were deadly knife fighters and are still learned from in the modern day.

Ray: And despite his heritage, Nightwolf is well-versed in two other forms of martial arts--Vale Tudo and Taekwondo. Vale Tudo is essentially Brazilian MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) in that it takes example from several martial arts and combines them into one single style. Taekwondo is more stylized and teaches precision in kicks, open-hand strikes, and throws.

MARTIAL ARTS...
Apache Martial Arts
-Highly-trained in knife fighting
-Utilizes tomahawks, grapples, and archery as well
-Not above fighting dirty
Vale Tudo
-Brazilian equivalent of MMA
-No rules
Taekwondo
-Korean martial art
-More honed in terms of technique than Vale Tudo

Ray: Nightwolf has been through a lot to protect Earthrealm from evil. In order to bind and trap the Dragon King, Onaga, to the pits of Hell, Nightwolf became a Sin Eater; a hellish entity that feeds off the sins of others (in Nightwolf’s case, the sins of his forefathers).

Steel: He even went and did it himself to ensure that his then-violent nature wouldn’t hurt his fellow Kombatants...until Raiden reversed time so all that crap never happened. Even then, Nightwolf has taken on Kombatants from Scorpion to Sindel and held his own against them. I said it once, I’ll say it again, Raiden was wise to choose him as an ally.

(Nightwolf: Your aggression is misplaced, but I have found a new purpose in serving the spirits. *turns to face Scorpion* I do not cling to the past.)

Thunder 2 by Dimension-Dino

CHIEF THUNDER…
First Appearance: “Killer Instinct” (1994)
Age: 47
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 295lbs
Ethnicity: Nez Perce Indian
Theme:

FEATS…
Entered the second Killer Instinct Tournament
Killed Spinal to avenge his brother
Defeated former KI winner, Black Orchid
-By doing so, learned that his brother was alive

Ray: Hinnamatoom, also known as Chief Thunder, was the chieftain of a Native American tribe known for their connections to legendary phoenixes and thunderbirds. While initially an enigma as to what his ethnicity was, the latest KI reveal showed that he was from Devil's Landing, Idaho.

Steel: Hey! My uncle's from Idaho! Think he knows the guy?

Ray: Ignoring. Using the location of Seven Devils, we were able to pinpoint Native American reservations in the state and found that Thunder is of the Nez Perce people.

Steel: Wow. Amazing what you learn just from trying to figure out which guy will kill the other guy.

Ray: After Thunder's brother, Black Eagle, mysteriously disappeared when he entered the first of Ultratech’s Killer Instinct tournaments, Thunder took it upon himself to find out about his brother’s fate.

Steel: He found out, alright. Turned out that Black Eagle was supposedly killed in the tournament by the cackling skeleton, Spinal. Naturally ticked off, Thunder took part in the tournament to destroy Ultratech and avenge his brother’s death. Strange, from the cutscene, I always thought that his brother WAS Spinal.

Ray: That's ridiculous! If that were the case, Thunder and his brother would have to be anywhere between six-hundred and two-thousand years old!

Steel: Hey, I was a kid! Cut me some slack! 'Sides, it was kinda vague as to how it was interpreted.

Ray: Yeah, clarity wasn’t exactly KI’s strong suit. That aside, Thunder is one of Killer Instinct’s most brutal characters. He makes this apparent when he always carries a pair of tomahawks into battle with him.

Steel: Tomahawks are handy weapons, able to hook away other weapons, has the option to be thrown, and (most importantly) cut down hordes of enemies like they were trees! He's like a lumberjack, people-edition.

Ray: Thunder does not appear to have a specific martial art, but is likely to be proficient in Okichitaw, a mixture of Native American martial arts, hapkido, taekwondo, and judo. To better use this art, Thunder also uses a self-taught combat style designed to maintain his ground while maneuvering around his opponent and manipulating their attacks. This moveset comes complete with a combination of headbutts, elbow and knee strikes, heavy swings with his tomahawks, kicks, and leaping stomps.

Steel: Ooh! Can’t forget my all-time favorite move of his, Call of the Earth, where he…just watch.

(Thunder slams tomahawks into opponent, uses them to lift them off the ground, slam them into the ground opposite Thunder, dislodges the axes, then stomps on their faces)

Steel: WOO! BRUTAL!

MOVESET…
Likely proficient in Okichitaw
-Combines hapkido, judo, and taekwondo
-Mixes with own unique fighting style
Sammamish
-Rising headbutt followed by a dive-stomp
Triplax
-180-degree spin while striking with tomahawks
Ankle Slicer
-Low strike with Tomahawks
Call of the Earth
-…what was shown above
No Mercy
-Uppercuts opponent with tomahawks
-Guaranteed victory if landed
Tomahawks
-Dual-wields
-Versatile and lethal weapons

Ray: Nightwolf isn’t the only shaman coming to this battle. Thunder also makes use of shamanistic arts in combat. He has been shown to utilize lightning, fire, and even shadow to amplify his already-impressive moveset. He can shoot fireballs, call down lightning, engulf his axes with electricity, and grant himself shadow powers.

Steel: What are these shadow powers? A little something called Spiritual Dash. This increases his dash speed and allows him to phase past projectiles and his opponent to get behind them while in the dash state.

SHAMAN POWERS…
Fire
-Shoots fireballs
Lightning
-Launches javelins of lightning
-Calls lightning down to strike opponents
-Laces axes with electricity to amplify attacks
Shadow
-Spiritual Dash: Instinct Mode that increases maneuverability, attack speed, and the ability to phase through projectiles
-Shadower Moves: Rapid-fire repeats of certain moves (Triplax, Ankle Slicer, Call of the Earth, etc.)

Ray: While he is capable of ranged attacks, close-quarters combat is Chief Thunder’s bread and butter. His grappling skills are second to none in the KI universe, maneuvering around his opponents to attack from almost every conceivable angle before finishing them off.

Steel: Plus, he’s so awesome that, if his combos go high enough, a freakin’ tornado is guaranteed to appear in the background. He's even defeated Black Orchid, winner of the Second Tournament and killer of Eyedol.

Ray: And by doing so, Thunder learned that his brother lived. And after an encounter with Fulgore, Thunder finally knew the truth about his brother; that Ultratech plundered Eagle's mind and used it to power their cyborg warrior.

Steel: NOOOOOOOO!

Ray: To this day, Thunder hopes to free Eagle from Ultratech and finally grant him peace. Until then, he will follow the laws of nature and fight to survive.

Steel: Nightwolf better watch out, 'cuz there's a storm a-coming.

(Thunder: Qe'Ci'yew'yew. "Thank you" in Nez Perce)
Who is going to emerge victorious in this battle of Native American war-chiefs? One thing is certain: blades and lightning will fly.

If there's anything that I'm missing on either of the two, feel free to notify me.
